The exhibition "Playground" by photographer Ville Varumo has opened in the Bang Bang Gallery. The Gallery is located in Aalto EE’s premises in the main building of the Aalto University School of Business.
In Ville Varumo’s series “Playground” randomness takes over beauty and control. Portraits and still lifes – the classics of visual arts – have been given a new distorted and obscured surface bringing forward a contemporary combination of both delight and melancholy.
The portraits are caught in a different spacetime altogether with Varumo including elements of the more styled and set-up nature of the fashion world context. While the portraits give space for the characters to become their own, the abstracts play with the concept of images being caught between paintings and photographs.
“I have been following Ville’s career since the very beginning when he was still an assistant to a photographer I used to worked with. When he started shooting of his own he immediately created his own, original style not similar to any other Finnish photographers. His sense for details and style give pleasure to an eye and are very soothing,” says gallerist Heli Mäenpää of the Bang Bang Gallery.
Ville Varumo shoots mainly editorial and commercial work but has now taken the first step towards a world of own personal projects.
“That’s what we want to support at Bang Bang Gallery: whenever a young photographer has something interesting to show and is enthusiastic about it. To us it doesn’t really make a difference if he has a background as a fine art photographer or comes from other fields of photography," concludes Heli Mäenpää.
