Short school days, little homework, few exams and excellent learning results! Many people wonder how Finnish schools made this happen. Now, two Finnish institutions – Aalto University Executive Education (Aalto EE) and the University of Helsinki Centre for Continuing Education (HY+) – are introducing a unique executive program to enhance pedagogical leaders’ understanding of innovation in education and learning.
“Creative play is a natural way for children to learn and is a key part of the Finnish approach to teaching. We combine the best practices and experience of Finnish schools in K-12 education, HY+’s know-how in educational psychology and teacher education, and Aalto EE’s expertise in strategic leadership and service design,” says Anna-Maija Ahonen, Senior Program Manager at Aalto EE.
For years, Finland has been among the top-performing countries in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) rankings.
“It is clear that the rest of the world is more interested than ever in the Finnish education system. At the University of Helsinki, we have been organizing educational visits for nearly a decade. Demand for these has grown strongly and the more holistic program we are now launching will meet this need,” says Anna Rantapero-Laine, Head of Training at the University of Helsinki HY+.
The first program, the “Diploma in Innovation in Education”, will be held in Helsinki on August 29 – September 3, 2016. Based on presentations by distinguished speakers, participants will explore innovation trends in schools and the 21st century way-of-learning. They will also discuss the latest international challenges in education, with reference to a range of strategic methods and techniques, such as design thinking, lean entrepreneurship, leadership and creative approaches to learning.
