Karoliina Paappa's photographic installation "Chimera" creates mental scenery

9.6.2017

Karoliina Paappa’s photography exhibition “Chimera” has been opened in Bang Bang Gallery. In the exhibition, Paappa continues her photographic installations reflecting her own memories and emotions. The Gallery is located on Aalto EE’s premises in the main building of the Aalto University School of Business.

Karoliina Paappa (b. 1983) is a Finnish artist who is currently studying at the Aalto University School of Art, Design and Architecture in Helsinki. She began working on this series in 2011. In “Chimera” we will see the latest additions to this theme. The exhibition consists of 15 works of various sizes.

“In this series, I process sorrow, the need to feel safe as well as the subsequent process of becoming whole and independent. The die-cut scrap characters allow me to take on different roles in order to deal with the emotions connected to my inner processes; using masks helps me to distance myself from the topic. This method enables me to process painful issues in reasonably sized elements,” says Paappa.

The body of work has been photographed in installed spaces, in which Paappa has built mental scenery out of enlarged die-cut scraps and ready-made objects. She is attracted to their way of imitating reality and of telling stories by visual means. In the series the themes of narration, the experiential side, magical realism and the relation of emotion to architectural space are repeated. The roles of the characters evolve during the series, as they gradually change from passive beings to active agents that create their own realities.

Karoliina Paappa mainly works with photographic art and installation art. She is interested in observing issues concerning individuals and wider issues affecting society and culture. Her works have been exhibited in countries such as South Korea, Poland, Estonia, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Italy and Greece.

The exhibition will be open by appointment from 18 May to 10 September 2017 (contact heli@bangbang.fi).
