Board of Directors is a high-level director and executive program with a truly global and strategic perspective for executives and non-executives.
The program will develop board members’ abilities to evaluate a company’s strategy in a constantly changing business environment. The focus is on strengthening the boards’ capability to direct the company. Participation in the program requires commitment to evolving as a team member in order to make personal board performance more effective.
The main objective of the Board of Directors program is to provide participants with a view of the global economy and its impact on organizations and the way strategies are built. Tools are provided for assessing an organization's strategy from a board perspective, together with new insights on how to build a board with dynamics that will facilitate good decision making.
After the program the participants:
Have enhanced their ability to contribute to the success of the organization as a board member,
Have enhanced their ability to assess the strategy of the organization,
Have enhanced their ability to understand and contribute to the dynamics of the board in a positive manner in order to make the best possible decisions as a board, and
Have a view on means to support the CEO and the executive board.
Starting
The 2018 program received excellent customer feedback with an overall rating of 5.1 out of 6.
"The ability to act as a strategic board member" was rated the key competence developed during the program.
The Board of Directors program offers ways for a board to develop a global mindset to sense and interpret transformation in the global economy. It strengthens the ability of a board to direct company strategy, and supports company performance when developing more effective board dynamics.
The Board of Directors program is designed for people with experience in, or aspirations towards, working on a board.

Aija Bärlund
Senior Advisor, Sold Oy
Internationalisation, business development and strategic sustainability are the focus areas of Aija Bärlund’s work. During her career she has consulted several Finnish companies to go international and strengthen their positions on the global markets, particularly in Central Europe, China and Scandinavia.
Bärlund has solid experience in leading development projects. Together with strategic foresight and industry teams she has built entirely new export industries for Finland.
She has extensive experience in consulting SME’s and listed companies, startups, public sector organisations and associations. Within management consulting she has experience in developing executive team and board work, foresight, business scenarios and strategies, service, technology and business development, internationalisation, market and competitor intelligence, brands and sustainability.
Currently Bärlund holds board and advisory positions in the following industries: management consulting (strategy and brands), care services, foodcare, education and insurance. Bärlund also holds positions in the Federation of Finnish Entrepreneurs, in the board of Espoon Yrittäjät and in the Finnish Association for Environmental Management.
Matti Suominen
Matti Suominen is Professor of Finance at Aalto University School of Business. He specializes in information economics in financial markets, market microstructure and corporate finance.
Suominen has previously worked as a consultant at the European Corporate Finance Practice of McKinsey & Co. and as a Chief Dealer in the Options and Futures Markets in Finland. From 1997 until 2006 he was in the full time faculty at INSEAD, working first as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor of Finance. Although already also at the Aalto University, between 2006 and 2015 he has continued to work with INSEAD as an Adjunct Professor of Finance or as a Visiting Professor of Finance.
Suominen is actively involved in management consulting to financial institutions and executive education. He has taught in the MBA, PhD and executive education programs. He has also taught in several company specific programs worldwide.
Matti Suominen did his PhD in Financial Economics in 1997 at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has also worked as a Visiting Associate Professor at Wharton.
Timo Seppälä
Timo Seppälä works as Professor of Practice, Digital Operations at the Aalto University and as Research Associate at The Research Institute of the Finnish Economy, ETLA. His research interest lie in contemporary global phenomena like digitalization, platform economy and global value chains as well as strategic management and internationalization of firms.
Seppälä's areas of expertise include Business Intelligence and Analyses, Global Business Unit and Account Management, Strategic and Operative Business Development, Supplier and Customer Relationship Management and Contract Negotiations.
Dr. Seppälä has over 15 years of business experience in several Finnish and international companies for example Metso, OMG Kokkola Chemicals, Oracle, Elcoteq and SAP.
Tomi Laamanen
Tomi Laamanen is a Chaired Professor for Strategic Management and Director at the Institute of Management of St. Gallen University. He specializes in strategic management, mergers & acquisitions and strategic processes.
Previously Dr. Laamanen has served as a Chair of Strategic Management of Aalto University (1998-2011) and Director of the Institute of Strategy of Aalto University (until 2011). He is a strategy consultant and member of the board to firms from different industries.
Laamanen’s previous experience also includes being an Associate Editor at Strategic Management Journal, Editorial Board Member at Journal of Management and Co-chair at SMS Finland Special Conference 2010.
Tomi Laamanen holds two D.Sc. degrees; one in Strategy and one in Finance.
Pekka Mattila
Dr. Pekka Mattila serves as a Professor of Practice at the Aalto University School of Business. He works frequently with European, Asian, African and North-American executive audiences on themes of strategic management and agility, strategy co-creation, business model innovation, executive leadership, top team dynamics, change management, organizational culture and strategic marketing.
Since spring 2011 he has served as the Group Managing Director and Associate Dean of Aalto University Executive Education.
In addition to his academic activities Dr. Mattila has conducted an active business career. Currently he serves as the Chairman of the Board or as a Member of the Board at a number of innovative companies. Previously he served in executive, management and senior staff positions in the Nordic financial services industry. Currently he serves as a Member of the Board of The Finnish National Gallery. From 2009 till 2017 he served as the Chairman of the Board of the Helsinki Festival. He is a Founding Member of Nordic Institute of Business and Society.
Dr. Mattila holds a doctorate and masters in sociology at the University of Helsinki and an Executive MBA at London Business School. Over the years, he has frequently visited a number of prestigious European and Asian universities teaching management, organizational behaviour, marketing and sociology. Dr. Mattila has authored a number of managerial books on leadership, change management and strategic marketing and sales.
Dr. Mattila’s consulting and coaching career started in 2003, and his corporate clients comprise over 270 Nordic and international companies, entrepreneurial ventures as well as prominent public sector institutions and NGOs.
